The Situation

The Cleveland Browns have been the worst team in football for the last 18 years. The average wins per season during that span of time is 4.9 wins, the lowest in the league. The Browns are 88-200 since the 1999 season, that is 16 games less than the next team. Cleveland has had nine head coaches and eight General Managers since 1999.

The Browns join three other teams that have not won a playoff game in twenty years (the Detroit Lions, the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals).

To add to the Browns predicament, DeShone Kizer has to start for a team that went 1-15. The only other rookie quarterback that had to start in a worse situation was Matthew Stafford after the Detroit Lions went 0-16.

Biggest Road Blocks

The first trial that DeShone Kizer will face is he has to survive his rookie year. The Cleveland Browns are not as bad as they were a year ago, but they are still considered a bottom five team. To keep Kizer on the track for success, the Browns must keep their Young quarterback healthy. Most of Cleveland’s new quarterbacks seem to get hurt before they reach their full potential. This is a tradition that Kaiser must break to succeed in the NFL.

Speaking of traditions and quarterbacks with the Cleveland Browns, another trial that DeSone Kizer will face is the curse of the starting QB for the Browns. Breaking the stigma of “the Cleveland quarterback” will be the hardest battle that Kizer has to fight while wearing the Browns uniform. The only way he can do this is to stay healthy and perform well. If he does these two things, then Cleveland will have something that they haven’t had in a long time, stability at the quarterback position.

Positives

DeShone Kizer is the 27th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999. However, there is hope for the fans of Cleveland. Kizer is a very young quarterback. He is tied with Jameis Winston as the third-youngest quarterback to start a season opener. This gives head coach Hue Jackson time to mold him into his system, it won’t be like Dak Prescott, but he will have the opportunity progress into a solid starter.

He has the tools to be a solid quarterback in the NFL. Kizer is 6 ft 4 inches and weighs 233 pounds with a powerful arm and excellent mobility. The sky is the limit for DeShone Kizer with his intangibles in the NFL.

Negatives

The problem with DeShone Kizer is that he is not accurate. He was off target with 14 .5% of his throws in his last year at Notre Dame. He also only completed 58.7 % of his passes. However, accuracy is not the biggest question about DeShone Kizer. The other pitfall of Deshone Kizer, which could be his downfall, is his inconsistent decision-making. In college, Kizer would reportedly not go through his progression. If his primary receiver was not available, he would rely on his mobility. That mindset does not work in the NFL and is a grave concern for his longevity in the league.

If Kizer is going halt the culture losing in Cleveland, he must improve his decision-making and remain healthy. I am not going to say that it is impossible for DeShone Kizer to bring stability to Cleveland’s quarterback position.  However, if he continues to get sacked seven times a game (like he was against the Steelers), then he will not remain healthy enough to bring stability.
