North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell Notches 1,000th Career Win

North Carolina’s women’s head coach Sylvia Hatchell made history on Tuesday as she got her 1,000th career victory when her Tar Heels beat Grambling State 79-63.

Hatchell joins some elite company, such as the late Pat Summitt of Tennessee (1,098 wins) and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer (1,018) and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (1,082) among Division I basketball coaches to hit the 1,000-win mark.

Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer is not far behind that mark. She is at 988 victories and is likely to reach 1,000 this season.

Hatchell’s record is now 1,000-376, with 728 of those victories coming at North Carolina and 272 at Francis Marion.

Hatchell is in her 32nd season at North Carolina, and her 43rd overall, winning an NCAA title with North Carolina in 1994, and AIAW and NAIA titles while at Francis Marion in 1982 and 1986. She has also won eight ACC tournament titles.
