St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Alex Reyes Done For Year, To Have Tommy John Surgery

The St. Louis Cardinals were excited for 22-year old pitching prospect Alex Reyes, who they anticipated competing with Michael Wacha for the 5th spot in their starting rotation.

But the excitement has turned to somberness as the team announced that Reyes has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and will have season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Reyes opened a lot of eyes since his debut on August 9th of last season. Reyes finished his season 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA in five starts and seven relief appearances giving the organization and their fans plenty to get excited about for 2017.

Reyes, who has an impressive fastball that can touch 101 mph, first experienced soreness in his elbow last week. The Cardinals waited until Tuesday’s physical to administer tests.

The loss of Reyes will increase the workload of Wacha this season and also removed Reyes from the Dominican Republic team competing in the World Baseball Classic.
