Almost every week in college football there are always going to be a few possible upsets. This week is no exception; however, there seems to be a higher number of games that could end with a surprising result. Six of the top ten teams play on the road and four of those teams opponents are high caliber. Even though only two teams in the top 25 play each other, this weekend might be full of surprises.
Not Going To Happen
Boston College vs. #2 Clemson ESPN2 3:30 PM ET
The argument can be made that the Clemson Tigers are the best team in college football. They have defeated two ranked teams including last year’s Heisman winner. Boston College, on the other hand, is one of the bottom teams in the ACC. The Tigers are a 34-point favorite, the Eagles will not come close to upsetting Clemson.
UNLV vs. #10 Ohio State BTN 12:00 PM ET
The Ohio State Buckeyes are going to be on a rampage after losing to Oklahoma two weeks ago. There is a reason that Ohio State is a 40-point favorite against the UNLV Rebels. Urban Meyer will unleash J.T. Barrett to build confidence, and I expect the Ohio State offense to double its total yards. An Ohio State win is as close as a guarantee that you can get in college football.
#3 Oklahoma vs. Baylor FS1 6:30 PM ET
The Baylor Bears have yet to win a game this season, whereas Oklahoma has beaten a top-5 Ohio State. Oklahoma is a 27-point favorite and with Baker Mayfield yet to throw an interception, and there is virtually no chance of Baylor pulling the upset this week.
Long Shot But Possible
#1 Alabama vs. Vanderbilt CBS 3:30 PM ET
With Alabama being the number one ranked team in college football, the odds that Vanderbilt can beat them is minuscule. However, this Vanderbilt team is not like other Vanderbilt teams. So far they have only allowed 4.3 points per game and have scored 28 points per game. Though they are 18 point underdogs, I would not count out the Commodores.
Northwestern vs. #9 Wisconsin ABC 12:00 PM ET
Wisconsin is another Big Ten team with a solid defense and an above-average offense. Northwestern is a bottom of the barrel Big Ten team. However, they are known for their upsets when it comes to ranked Big Ten teams. If Northwestern is going to pull the upset, then their offense is going to have to break Wisconsin’s defense which has only allowed 10 points per game. Wisconsin does not often lose while playing at home and I don’t see this Saturday being any different.
#5 USC vs. California ABC 3:30 PM ET
USC has a Heisman candidate as its quarterback and has a very prominent offense. With 13 straight wins against Cal, the Trojans come into this week very confident. Cal is a 17-point underdog, however, they are undefeated and are playing at home. With USC playing Texas so close, it makes you wonder which USC team will show up for this game. This will also be USC’s first road test of the year.
Games To Watch
#7 Washington vs. Colorado FS1 10:00 PM ET
With both teams being undefeated, this game has some potential for an upset. However, Colorado will have to slow down the high-powered offense of the Huskies. With the Huskies scoring 47 points per game and Colorado only allowing nine points per game, I expect this game to have a real chance for an upset.
#8 Michigan vs. Purdue FOX 4:00 PM ET
The Wolverines have had poor play from their quarterback and a lack of production from their offense. However, their defense is ranked # 2 in the nation for yards allowed. Wilton Speight has been a below average quarterback, and an above average Purdue can upset Michigan. Michigan is only a 10 point favorite of which Purdue has the offensive, and defensive ability to erase.
#16 TCU vs. #6 Oklahoma State ESPN 3:30 PM ET
The best game to watch this weekend, the TCU Horned Frogs are poised to upset #6 Oklahoma State. TCU has scored 49 points per game with only two turnovers. Oklahoma State is a 13 Point favorite, but with the over-under line being at 71.5, this game will be a high-scoring affair. With this being a shootout, I believe this game is more up in the air than the experts think.
#4 Penn State vs. Iowa ABC 7:30 PM ET
Penn State is possibly the best team in the Big Ten with returning the majority of its offense including it’s possible Heisman caliber running back. The only wrinkle and this week’s game is that Iowa is well known for ruining big teams seasons. Last year they ruined Michigan’s chance of making the college football playoff. Penn State is only a 13-point favorite, and the Hawkeyes play over their heads at home. This night game is going to be harder for the Nittany Lions then most think. Watch for a major upset in Iowa City.
