The defending world series champion Houston Astros are close to adding yet another top starter, this one in the name of Gerrit Cole. Houston’s rotation could be adding yet another young controllable starter, with very high upside. Cole is set to be a free agent in 2020.
Pittsburgh will be receiving big name prospect Colin Moran, whom many believe is major league ready. Making the trip to the Burgh along with Moran will be relievers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz. Musgrove is coming of a ok season, while Feliz is looking for a bounceback campaign from a disappointing 2017. Double A outfielder Jason Martin has also been acquired by the Pirates.
The Astros were seen as a team that was looking for another “high end starter”, but most people (including myself) expected a free agent signing. Houston was known to have quite a bit of interest in Yu Darvish, but now it seems that the champs decided on a different route. With the acquisition of Cole, it most likely eliminates the Astros as a contender for Darvish, possibly encouraging other teams in on the Japanese righty.
The Yankees were also very much in on Cole, and at one point they were seen to be the front runner for the starter. It was known that the Pirates wanted top Yankee prospect Gleyber Torres as a part of the return for Cole. Understandably, New York was hesitant.
Now that the trade is complete and offical, it may be expected that names such as McCutchen and Harrison will also be packing their bags in the coming weeks.
