Georgia Tech’s A.J. Gray, Jake Stickler Giving Up Football Over Health Issues

Georgia Tech starting defensive back A.J. Gray and offensive lineman Jake Stickler are giving up football because of medical issues.

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson announced the news on Monday, saying he’s “extremely saddened” for the players but also made it clear that “health always trumps football.”

Both Gray and Stickler will remain on scholarship while not counting against the school’s 85-player scholarship limit.

Gray was heading to his senior season but is quitting due to a heart condition. Gray was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference defensive back of the week after making two interceptions in a 33-7 win over North Carolina.

Stickler started 10 games at right tackler, as a junior, in 2017 but did not disclose an medical issues.
